1. What is the title of the position?  Manufacturing/Development Engineer.
  2. What are the three most important functional tasks this person will perform? Development of new products, process improvement in Laminates and filament winding, troubleshooting quality and production issues.
  3. Background of the person you seek? Background of successful hires? Why successful? The person who previously held the job? An engineer who has worked in laminates and or filament winding or a person with a technical aptitude who has significant experience in these areas.

  5. Education required? Desirable? Minimum education? See above. College Degree would be desirable but not mandatory.
  6. Personality type which would fit in well?   A hands on individual who likes to work in a small company and wearing multiple hats.
  7. What outcomes must be achieved in this position?   We need quality improvements in filament winding (reducing scrap) and efficiency improvements in our decorative laminate production.
  8. Promotional opportunity? Time frame?    Eventually the person could become plant manager. 5-10 years.
  9. What is the sizzle? Why would an outstanding person want this position?    Because they could have a big impact on the growth of the company which will also allow them to take on capital project to modernize the plant.
  10. Company details? Sales, growth last/next five years? Web site or other place where we can learn about company?  We are about 60 employees with revenue in the $10-15M range. I want to be 20M in the next 5 years.
  11. What industries do you serve? What is your position in these markets?    HV Electrical/Defense/Medical Industries.  We are a smaller player who wants to be a major player.
  12. Are there any companies from which you would not want to recruit because of special business relationships or such things? Where would you want us to recruit?  Mentioned above with regard to wood laminates.   A local company  is a competitor and if we could get someone from there who is qualified would be great too.
  13. Travel? (100% is four nights per week.)   No travel except occasional support to sales with new projects or quality concerns.
  14. Works with/Sells to:   OEM, Industrial, Distributors, Engineers, Consumers, Retail, Executive??  All industrial B to B sales
  15. This person will start to work with production staff and eventually have maintenance reporting to them.   Perhaps an employee to help with new product development.
  16. People work for people. To whom will the candidate report, and what is their title? How long have they been with the company? What prior positions have they held? What is their educational background? What outside interests are they involved in? Why are they excited about working for the company? (Remember. Good Candidates ask tough questions.)   They report directly to the President (me).   I am a mechanical engineer who has worked in plastics/composites for 30 years. I have been here for 7 months. My interests are very diverse but I like cars and have a motorcycle.
  17. What makes this person a good boss?   I am a mentor and supporter of my people and not a micromanager. I give objectives and allow the individual to make it happen with my support as needed.
  18. Interview process? Who else interviews? Who makes hiring decision? Who makes offer?  I do in nearly all cases. I will have my CTO, Controller, sales manager interview them.
  19. When do you need this person to be on board?  I hope by mid year or so but could need them sooner. 
  20. What are the weaknesses of your own company, and how do we overcome them?  The company is small and there are limited resources at present. Not much continuous improvement has been done over the years.
  21. Why don’t you fill this position internally?  No one is qualified and we need a fresh approach going forward.
